GIS is an acronym for Geographic Information Systems and is sometimes called computer mapping. It is a specialized field that includes the software, hardware and skills to create maps and supporting documents.
By definition, a geographic information system (GIS) lets us visualize, question, analyze, interpret, and understand data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts., ESRI.
Exactly who can use a GIS component to their project? This powerful mapping tool can be used by land management agencies, public utilities, businesses, school districts, marketing agencies and anything that has geographic data. Geographic data is an address or a known location on earth that is a part of data.
A GIS project starts by deciding what will be mapped. The next step is locating the data that will be mapped. Sometimes the data exists in a Word document or database or at times, the data will need to be created.
A timeline for a project can be 2 weeks or more. This depends on the data, the availability of the data and if data needs to be collected and created.
The project deliverables for a GIS project can be printed and web maps, reports, charts, mailing lists, a database of the information as well as graphics of the data.
Besides the most common ways to have a map (print copy and web). I am interested in:
The Landowner Map for generations – A stylish map to frame for a one-of-a-kind gift that will be cherished for years. It may be your family farm, family land, vacation retreat or your residence. Mapping a wonderful place in your family’s life is permanent.
The Wedding Map for your special day – A useful addition to the perfect day. A postcard sized map for visitors for where and when the festivities will be.
A Memory Map for framing – for a unique wall décor for your home or your location. The piece will be a tasteful, graphic representation to add a touch of place to your home or office.
Web Map for your site – Who needs a website? We all do and a great map only makes it better. Show your customers where you are located or where the next big event will be.
WEB & GRAPHIC DESIGN
You can’t have one without the other. Cartography and web design are a dynamic duo and it just makes sense for web building. Websites present your important information to the world 24/7. It takes time to build a site, but the results are worth the wait. Text, images, maps, digital media and programming elements are shaped by me to produce the pages seen on the worldwide web. It’s always on.
Of course, graphics, symbols, icons and illustrations are important parts to the site or your company’s brand. I can help you build it and design what needs to be visualized.
